The Book of Obadiah is the shortest work in the Hebrew Scriptures, a concentrated prophetic declaration concerning justice, memory, and the fate of nations.Composed in the aftermath of Jerusalem's fall in the sixth century BCE, Obadiah addresses the kingdom of Edom and reflects upon betrayal, violence, and historical reckoning. In spare and forceful language, the prophet speaks against arrogance and opportunism, warning that power secured through treachery does not endure. The book situates its message within the broader prophetic vision of moral accountability among nations.Though brief, Obadiah carries significant historical and theological weight. It articulates the principle that collective injustice bears consequence, while also affirming the eventual restoration of Zion. As part of the Twelve Minor Prophets, it stands as a sharply defined meditation on pride, judgment, and the moral order within history.
