Joe Sheldon used to write about Miami's criminals. Now he's working for one. After losing his column at a major newspaper, Joe's down to cheap drinks, old records, and a novel that isn't going to save him. He's not a cop. Not a detective. Just a guy who knows how to ask questions-and when to stop asking them.So when his old friend Dickie Caldwell offers him cash to find a gambler who skipped town owing serious money, Joe says yes.He shouldn't have.Because the gambler isn't the only one who's disappeared...Dickie's girlfriend is gone. There's a ransom note. And the story Joe's being told doesn't hold together. Now Joe's stuck between a man who expects results and a situation that's starting to feel a lot worse than a missing persons job. He's in over his head. And getting out isn't part of the deal.
