Rydal (9789354447334)

Step into a quiet pocket of William Wordsworth country, where every lane, fell and farmhouse carries a story. The past is close here. Rydal is more than a village; it is a key to the memory of the English Lake District countryside. In this graceful work of English local history, Miss Armitt traces the character of Rydal, the Lake District village set between lake and mountain, through its people, its church and parish history, and its changing English rural landscape. Drawing on tradition, archive and keen observation, she evokes how a small Westmorland community grew, worshipped, worked the land and welcomed travellers, long before the crowds of modern tourism. The result is a lake district history book that illuminates historic Cumbria, England from the inside, attentive to farms and cottages as much as to rectory and hall, and always alive to the presence of poetry in the landscape. For Lake District visitors curious about the stories behind the views, for local history lovers and Wordsworth enthusiasts exploring English Romantic poetry sites around Rydal and Grasmere, this volume offers a grounded companion to the paths and churchyards of the region. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. An English local history classic to keep and return to.
