Born on a plantation in Northern Virginia, all Sully wants to do is sit in his cottage and write the novel that finally explains Southern Exceptional. The Second World War disrupts his plans. Failing a draft physical he joins the Aviation Cadets with the hope of becoming a pilot. He is arbitrarily chosen to be a bombardier and ends up on the Hollis crew.
